Spring Fashions - Hooray!

Posted by Posh Mommy

Spring has sprung - or at least it is trying to here in Portland.  The cherry blossoms are in bloom and daffodils are popping up all over town.  These Spring blooms have got me thinking about warmer weather fashions for my girls.  I am a girly girl at heart, I love feminine fashions and am always on the look out for cute and frilly sundresses; however, they MUST be functional.  I am a strong believer that children's fashion must not restrict movement.  I have been a fan of Kit and Lili for a while now.  The silhouettes are simplistic but the cut leaves plenty of mobility for jumping and dancing.  Plus, the prints are so fun and colorful - perfect with flip flops when the weather is warm .  I just love bold prints in bright colors, items such as those shown below are staples of my daughter's wardrobes and so versatile for Portland's unpredictable weather.  When Spring temperatures drop, I simply add leggings and a denim jacket and they are good to go.

Let's not forget the boys, their T-shirts are equally adorable.  Boy's fashions can be a little - well, unimaginative at times which is why I turn to graphic T's when purchasing clothing for the little boys in my life.  Throw these on with a pair of basic board shorts or jeans and you instantly up the cute factor of your outfit.

Magic Moments

Posted by Posh Mommy

It's been a hell of a week for me ladies - so sorry in advance for the short but sweet post.

I have reached a crucial point in the development of my business and have been busy running around getting things settled, I am also chairing a committee for a charity organization I am a member of and my big fundraising project launched this week, in addition to that there are the usual tasks required to run a household!!  (Sorry for the venting but doesn't it just feel so good to let it all out?)  Yet today was one of those days where I was reminded to sit back, relax, and let all the worries drift away. How?  I was walking with my two daughters and my little one reached over and placed her tiny hand into her big sister's.  They looked at each other smiling, giggled, and gingerly made their way across the street.  A simple act, yes - but for me so monumental.  My sister and I are very close, best friends really, and I so very much wanted my girls to experience that closeness.  This tender moment was the 1st of many loving exchanges that I hope I to witness between the two of them.  Just goes to show, even when you feeling overstretched and stressed beyond belief there will always be these magic moments to ground you.

Enjoy the weekend, see all you lovelies on Monday.

The Villa

Posted by Posh Mommy

A childhood friend of mine had the most exquisite dollhouse growing up.  I think her grandfather built it for her, it looked like an old Victorian mansion and was filled with miniature tapestried sofas and tiny china dishes.  It even had electricity flowing through what looked like Tiffany lamps. I loved that dollhouse and pined over it for years.  When my daughter turned 3, my husband and I bought her a dollhouse.  It is simple and sweet and very age appropriate and we have spent many happy hours playing with it.  The house was purchased from Pottery Barn Kids for about $200, it is no longer available but is very similar to this.

The other day I was cruising the Little Urbanites website, I love this site and the actual store is located in Portland where I live.  They have beautiful children's clothing, a wonderful variety of baby gear, and the customer service is excellent!  If you live in or are visiting Portland definitely check them out. Anyways, in my browsing I found The Villa and was definitely in awe. Although I myself do not live in a modern structure, I have always admired the clean lines and open spaces of modern homes.  This dollhouse, as you can see below is truly a modern work of art.  I am guessing that the designer must have been inspired by Philip Johnson's Glass House (also below).  So, if you are a loft loving mommy and are looking for a dollhouse that blends perfectly into your modern home.  Look no further, for a mere $900 this puppy can be all yours.

Burning a Hole in my Pocket

Posted by Posh Mommy

This past Christmas my wonderful husband gifted me with a large sum in Saks gift cards. I had originally thought I would save the cards and apply them towards a big ticket item such as a handbag.  However, as the only bags I seem to really salivate over are well above $2000 that idea went out the door!  I then thought I'd stock up on staple items - jeans, black pants, you know more of what I already have - again, bad idea.  I am now considering the items below. These are slightly more frivolous than what I would usually buy but would definitely see some wear when the warmer weather hits.  I am leaning towards the Ali Roi dress and Loeffler Randall sandals.  Check them out - I would love to hear your feedback.

I have been wanting to purchase a diaphanous floral dress for summer. The colors on this version keep it from looking too sweet and I am digging the drop waist and racer back.  I would most likely wear this with flat sandals and a denim jacket - but it would be equally cute for evening with strappy heels or a slim heeled wedge.

Ali Roi Printed Silk Dress - $235

Kind of, sort of a basic - yes.  However, not unlike anything I have in my wardrobe.  It is always wet in Portland so even on what seems like a sunny day, I will throw a light jacket in my bag just in case.  I'd get a lot of use out of this number but maybe a little too boring.  Could probably get something similar for less, your thoughts?

Ali Roi Long Sleeve Anorak - $275

Definitely a splurge item for me.  I don't usually pay this much for sandals, a great black pump perhaps but sandals are an item that I feel can be bought on the cheap.  However, just look at the ruffled T strap - perfection.  Plus, the color is amazing!  What do you think?

Loeffler Randall Ruffle Suede Flat - $475

Much to my husband's dismay - I love stripes.  A striped T feels so Parisian and instantly makes even jeans look more chic.  The mix and matched stripes are super cute and a departure from my basic black and white T.  Again, a great easy dress for Summer but I am thinking perhaps a little boring?

Post Baby Blues

Posted by Posh Mommy

One month prior to my due date I packed my hospital bag.  Besides the obvious baby items, I also vividly remember packing a pair of jeans thinking I would slip right in to those bad boys post baby.  Yet when the day came to bring home my newborn, I was shocked to see that I still looked at least 3 months pregnant! Stupidly, I thought those extra pregnancy pounds instantly dropped off once the baby was delivered.  Boy, was I wrong - not only did they not miraculously disappear they decided to stick around for a while.

One of my oldest and dearest friends recently had a beautiful baby girl. Now 3 months post pregnancy she is cursing that darn baby weight and is faced with heading back to work with nothing properly fitting to wear.  She reached out and asked if perhaps I could address this issue at the Posh Mom.  Lady, this is for you - I have selected a few key items that would be flattering and fashionable post baby.

Please note: I tried to focus on items $150 or less not super cheap but within reason for clothing you might wear for a few months.  May seem pricey for items that you want to be in and out of - but I guarantee when you are feeling less than hot about your bod you'll appreciate the better fitting items.

SPANX - Run and I do mean run to get a pair of these.  They give the appearance of smooth lines and are an instant tummy toner.  Worth every penny.

Empire Waist Dresses - another key item for your post pregnancy wardrobe. They accentuate the positive (hello cleavage) and almost eliminates the negative or at least partially conceals that post baby pooch.

Accessorize!  A great way to pump up any outfit is to add fabulous accessories. I am loving the multi strand version below for it's versatility (which warrants the price) - it would look equally gorgeous with a dress as it would with jeans and a T.  Plus, you can still use it once you lose the baby weight.

Banana Republic Luxe 3 Strand Necklace - $98
Image: Banana Republic

The last item on my back to work list - a basic cardigan.  I would recommend a longer style which could help conceal any extra baggage you may be carrying in the trunk.  I would purchase these in basic black and perhaps add a brighter color for variety.  Cardigans are a great and relatively inexpensive way to bring new life to a basic dress.

Image: Banana Republic

I would also recommend treating yourself to a mani/pedi or perhaps a cut and color.  These treatments can make all the difference post baby.  I know a great haircut always makes me feel like a million bucks.  Last but definitely not least cut yourself a little slack.  Having a baby is a nine month process we can't expect our bodies to recover in a few quick months.  If you start to feel down, focus on your little bean and enjoy remember to enjoy every moment.

Story Time

Posted by Posh Mommy

When looking back on my childhood, I have wonderful memories of the hours spent reading with my mom and dad.  My favorite childhood books being classics such as Where the Wild Things Are, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and Good Night Moon.  Now, being a parent myself I get such joy from reading these books to my daughters. However, as they have gotten older my children have discovered a few of their own "classics" and I wanted to share a few of these books with all of you.  Hope you and enjoy them as much as we do.

Just letting everyone know that I have set up an Amazon store, where I will periodically post some of my favorite picks noted on the Posh Mom site.  I have such fun sharing these fantastic finds with all of you and thought why not go one step further and make them available in one spot - gotta love virtual shopping. In addition, the books noted below are listed well below retail prices.  Ease and at a discount? Who could ask for anything more

Members Only

Posted by Posh Mommy

I love finding a great bargain - who doesn't, right?  I think my love for sales originated in college, where I had champagne tastes on a beer budget.  I went to school in San Francisco where every designer brand under the sun was at my fingertips.  At that time, I couldn't afford these higher end items and would wait patiently for department store or samples sales in the hopes of scoring that one coveted piece.   Even now, despite the fact that I have a bit more disposable income I've continued looking for bargains.  For me, finding that fabulous dress or blouse heavily discounted is like finding a needle in a haystack.  That said, "members only" online designer sales have become the new equivalent of my discount shopping sojourns. Designer items, on sale, and only a click lies between you and that dream piece.  Many of these sites offer up to 60% off retail prices and are a fantastic way to beef up your wardrobe on a budget.

Although, there are several designer discount sites but I am going to focus on my two favorites.

The Mini Social focuses on mother, baby, and child - I especially like this site for children's apparel.  They have fantastic assortment of smaller, independent, boutique lines - you're likely to discover new lines that are sure to become favorites.  In order to have access to the online sales you must sign up as a member - the site then notifies you of weekly sales.  Once notified log in and start shopping.

The second site is a great source for higher end designer clothing.  They phenomenal sales for women, men, and children at Gilt.

This site is by invitation only, you must be invited by an existing member to join.  So, hit me up if you need an invite.  High end designer brands such as Thakoon, Derek Lam, and even Vera Wang have recently been featured.  I have also seen more affordable lines such as Tory Burch, Cole Haan, and Ralph Lauren Children promoted.  Each week you will be sent an email noting the week's sales, you will also receive a daily email reminding you of sales for the day.  The online store opens promptly at 12:00 Eastern time, 9 am Pacific - quantities are limited so log in early for the best selection.

Stains be Gone

Posted by Posh Mommy

As a mother I am all too familiar with the down and dirty aspects of being a parent - translation streaks, spills, and stains of various nature that almost always pop up on carpet and upholstery. How they get there?  I am not always sure, but as anyone can attest these stains are potent and in my case frequent.  However, now when I discover an unexpected spill I turn to my new favorite cleaning product - Woolite Oxy Deep!  I am telling you ladies, this product will change the way you look at stains.  My one year old spilled a full (yes full) glass of red wine on my beige carpet.  I grabbed the only carpet cleaner I had, scrubbed, scrubbed some more, and was still left with an atrocious brown spot on the carpet.  Much to my dismay, I was forced to let the stain sit overnight until I was able to hit my super market to purchase a stronger product.  I came home, Woolite in hand and attacked!  After a few minutes, the stain magically disappeared, seriously, not a trace.  From that point I was hooked.  Since then, I have used this product to completely erase muddy footprints, tea, and coffee from the carpet as well as a lovely drawing my daughter doodled on my upholstered headboard.  Poof, gone.  Run, to your local market and snatch this up pronto - your carpet will thank you.

Don't Forget the Boys

Posted by Posh Mommy

As I am the mother to two little girls, so it never occurred to me to address boys fashion here at the Posh Mom.  However, a reader was kind enough to make the request and I am happy to oblige!  I do have a 2 year old nephew and when I am shopping for him, I tend to gravitate towards simple styles with great graphics or interesting details.  My nephew is a real bruiser at times so his clothes and I assume most little boys clothing needs to be rough and ready.  That said, no one should have to choose function over style, right?

The T's below are designed by the Winter Water Factory a small design group located in Brooklyn, NY.  All designs are hand printed on 100% cotton.  Plus, they only use water based inks -which not only is better for the environment but also creates a softer hand. Environmentally friendly, cute, and comfy - who could ask for more.  I also want to point out, that they also have a printed T's for little girls, onesies for both sexes, and it looks like they will be adding women's pieces as well as home accessories.  Check them out here.

I am really digging (no pun intended) the tractor T below.  The olive green really pops against the light blue.

Front Loader Thermal T - $36

Another great construction theme, and the bright orange crane would be a real hit with the boys.

Crane Thermal T - $36

This T made me chuckle - my cousin used to carry around this stuffed alligator when we were young.  I know for a fact, that he still has a piece "Allie" hidden away somewhere.

Alligator T - $36

Getting my daughter to focus when it comes to learning her ABC's is like pulling teeth.  I thought this T which is also available in pink might make lessons a bit more fun.

Cheap Thrills - Posh Mom Picks $50 and Under

Posted by Posh Mommy

Although it is still cold and rainy here in Portland, we have had a few nice sunny days which have provided enough warmth for the daffodils and hyacinths to start popping up in my garden. The sight of these lovely flowers makes me long for Spring.  Being a native of California, march is about the time it starts to warm up.  This is definitely not the case here in Portland. Yet, despite the dreary weather I have started scouring the web for new Spring kit. When warmer temperatures hit, I spend most of my free time running around the playground or kicking back at one of the many public fountains around town.  Often, I am covered in either grass, sand, and quite frequently ice cream.  Other times, I am completely drenched as my kids love to run through any water feature we may encounter in our daily adventures.  Hence, my warm weather gear is usually a hodgepodge of staple items I already own mixed in with more moderately priced items I pick up at local chain stores.  So, today I am dedicating my post to my favorite picks $50 and under - as we all now you can still look chic no matter what your budget may be.

First and foremost a great bag is essential - and I love the look of a straw bag. It reminds of the beach and is durable and fashionable for day use.  The one below from J Crew would be perfect as it pretty works into just about any outfit.

J Crew Medium Straw Bag - $49

Outfit #1 - Play date with the kids

I am not always in my element when it comes to short shorts but a combo of a tailored short and a soft and breezy top is something I could definitely see myself in this Spring.  The lantern sleeves on this blouse are so fresh and who could resist the soft ruffling on the front.  I'd glam this up with a great pair of jeweled sandals like the one's shown below - a great addition to your wardrobe as they could easily be dressed up or down.

Gap Lantern Sleeve Ruffle Top - on sale for $34.99

Forever 21 Button Side Short - $12.80

Rampage "Richie" Sandal - $50 (Available at Piperlime)

Outfit #2 - Perfect for a day at the park

I love the look of nautical stripes with dark denim and the outfit shown below is a perfect combination of the two.  The denim jumpsuit looks super loungy and comfortable and the pleated bib on the front completely ups the cute factor.  The striped sweater with it's ruffle detailing is the perfect complement - girly and fun.  Last but not least - a simple chocolate brown flip flop completes the look.  Poof!  You're all set for a day of play.

Forever 21 "Joyce" denim jumpsuit - $24.80

J Crew Leather Capri Sandal - on sale for $39.50

Outfit #3 - Lunch then zoo with hubby and the kids

A mini skirt and soft tank are a great combo for a busy day.  I'd also add a scarf to jazz up this ensemble.  Scarves are a great way to liven up any outfit, I usually have one of my trusty pashminas wrapped around my neck but when the weather warms up I'd like to add a lighter weight version like the one below to my collection.  Shoes?  A studded gladiator is a perfect choice to complete the look.

Forever 21 Digi Striped Scarf - $9.80

J Crew Viscose Ruffle Tank - on sale for $29

Forever 21 "Diane" pocket skirt- $12.80

Blowfish "Lost City" Gladiator - $50 (Available at Piperlime)

Hello? Is anybody out there?

Posted by Posh Mommy

I started this blog for a few reasons.  One - I enjoy writing, it's fun! Two - My hope was to reach out and connect with other moms who like me, appreciate style, fashion, and cool as heck products. Cyberspace is really a friendly place and I was sure that there were other ladies just like me looking for some fun and friendly conversations.  If you are out there and reading my blog please, please, please leave a comment.  I would LOVE to hear from you and to know that perhaps I am not just talking to myself.  Many thanks and hope to hear from you soon!

I love Nordstrom; it's a one stop shop. I can pick up shoes for the kids, dress shirts for my hubby, and grab a new pair of jeans for myself all in one place.  Plus, you just can't beat Nordstrom's customer service - period.  Growing up in the suburbs of Northern California my department store choices were few but that all changed the day Nordstrom opened up in my town.  Once arrived, my mother quickly became a Nordstrom devotee and my sister and I were brought up knowing that this store was by far more superior than other retailers.  Like most mother's and daughters our recreational time was spent shopping and although it may seem shallow many of my favorite memories take place in this store.  My mother would take us for lunch in the cafe and afterwards treat us to a new T or dress from Brass Plum (oh, the memories).

To this day, even though I have since been introduced to Saks and Neimans I still gravitate towards my local Nordstrom store.  The merchandise is fashion forward enough for my tastes and I always find what I need from my Current Elliot jeans to Splendid T's, the choices are always plentiful.  Plus, if they don't have what you need, there isn't a store associate who wouldn't call around to ensure you went home with the item of your desire.  Every single time, I shop at Nordstrom I feel as if I am being treated to the highest level of customer service and in this day and age this can often be hard to come by.

My two girls are already in sync with my Nordstrom shopping habits. On a regular basis, you will find me browsing around the Savvy department - girls in tow.  I suppose I am keeping up with the longstanding mother-daughter shopping traditions set in place so long ago.

Air Travel with Kids

Posted by Posh Mommy

Photo: Air Italia

My husband is English and every year since we met we've crossed the pond to visit Jolly Old England. I have always loved these trips and would never think twice about the journey - 1o hours, no problem!  However, as we have added to our brood, the trip although still enjoyable has indeed become more difficult. Running though busy airports (toting toddlers), customs lines, and the additional baggage are a few of the slight inconveniences.  Yet, despite the challenges of traveling with young children I am ever so grateful that I have the opportunity to expose my girls to different cultures and exciting new cities.

My eldest daughter got her 1st passport at 3 months old and has since made the journey to Europe 7 times, these long hauls are in addition to about at least 15 trips within the continental US and she is only 3 years old.  My 1 year old has also become quite accustomed to flying.  Both are excellent travelers and I credit this to the fact that we exposed them to traveling at such a young age.  I think most new parents have the same vision when embarking on their first air journeys; it most likely involves a screaming child and a plane full of annoyed passengers. Try not to worry or the fear may stop you from booking those tickets!  Children are unpredictable and even the best fliers can become agitated mid-flight; they're kids, what can you do?

My recommendations if you are considering traveling with children?

1.  Get them started early so that they become acclimated with the thought of air travel, the younger the better.

2. Create hype - kids love excitement!

3.  Bring favorite snacks - low in sugar, you don't want the little ones bouncing off the airplane walls.

4.  Don't forget the entertainment - I recommend books and toys that cannot be turned into impromptu musical instruments - you're fellow passengers will thank you.

5.  Give yourself plenty of time before a flight to keep your stress levels down.

5.  Most importantly, have fun.  Instill a sense of wanderlust in your children and enjoy the special moments these trips will bring.

Travel is a wonderful experience wether it be to visit family, friends, or merely an escape to warmer climates.  If you are fortunate enough to afford the opportunity don't let it pass you by.

Posh Mom Picks

Photo: Giggle

I was on the Giggle website today and stumbled across the most stylish booster chair I have ever seen.  The booster seat I currently own, although completely functional, is ugly as sin.  It was purchased for my niece who is now 5, passed down to my daughter, and now in use by my 2nd daughter.  I am guessing you get the picture and can imagine the state this chair is in.  Yet, as there is absolutely nothing wrong with the item, I simply cannot justify getting rid of it.

However, if I were in need of a new booster seat I would definitely give the "Grow Up" booster a whirl.  Honestly, this chair is by far more superior than the average booster on the market. Above and beyond the design factor (don't you just love the modern shape and elliptical lines of this bad boy).  It also has a soft, flexible seat vs the hard plastic seats of a standard booster chair.  Really, would you want to sit through a meal on a non cushioned chair?  I didn't think so. The cost of style and comfort - $60, pricier yes but not outrageous and your children's tushies will thank you!  Click here for more details.

Pink Chicken

Posted by Posh Mommy

I discovered the Pink Chicken brand last year and was instantly smitten.  The classic silhouettes and colorful vintage inspired prints can easily be incorporated into the existing wardrobes of both my daughters.  Above and beyond the fact that the clothes are just so darn adorable, the brand delivers on multiple levels.   My girls are 3 1/2 and 1, the eldest being quite the diva when it comes to dressing.  First and foremost, the clothes must be pretty - luckily for me, the bright floral prints and delicate embroidery passes that category.  Second, not unlike her mother, comfort is key - the smock styled dresses and circle skirts allow freedom of movement. Easy, breezy, and perfect for an active fun-filled day!

Loving the prints on these dresses, aqua and lime are such fresh colors for Spring.  Did I mention, they just launched a line of women's tunics in the same great prints?  How fun, matching outfits for mommy and me.

My older daughter would adore these skirts.  Perfect for twirling and the pom pom detailing is absolutely precious.

The colors remind me of rainbow sherbet.  Oh to be a kid again.

Check out the sweet and sassy ruffles on this diaper cover.  These will be a must have for my younger daughter come Summer.
